Dear Jane-Marie,

Now that summer is here, the kids are home, the dog is tracking in anything and everything and you might have upped your entertainment goals. Spills and stains are bound to happen. Here's a quick guide to caring for your decor.

Caring For Your Fabrics
|
- DO NOT use dishwashing liquid on upholstery and drapery fabrics in order to remove stains. These soaps MIGHT make a stain disappear, but "after a few days, the area that was cleaned will appear larger and darker because of soil attraction", according to FiberSeal, makers of a leading fabric care and cleaning system. Check out these Spotting Tips for spot removal tips from the pros. For existing upholstery and carpets, I recommend Fiber-Seal's 2 year package. Contact me for more information.
- The next time you are buying custom furniture, curtains or pillows, OR, if you are a do-it-yourselfer and you buy the fabric yourself to construct, consider having your bolts of fabric Nanotexed. I have used this process since late winter on everything from silk/linen pillows and faux silk panels to light beige sofas in a family room and the welting on accent pillows. The process is benign to the environment, it only has to be applied once and it makes the fabric impervious to stains. I can assist you in sending in your own fabric. The process is very reasonably priced. It is a must-do, in my opinion.
