Dear Jane-Marie,
decoratorHappy Halloween!!  I've been offline for a couple of months working on a free-standing birthing center in St Paul and a bunch of residential clients!  Look for after shots in upcoming newsletters!

If you are like me, you must be getting excited about snitching some of the Halloween candy - chocolate, especially!  So what better color to focus on!  Read below for ways to mix this color with brights for added dimension.

And remember, we are now on Facebook!  Follow current projects and start discussions!  Find us on Facebook

Sincerely,

Jane-Marie

New Color Combos to Consider
I'm having a lot of fun with pink and chocolate these days!  If you're tired of the blue and chocolate fad, consider keeping the chocolate and switching out the blue to something brighter.  Here is a recent design I did to update a small powder room.

Another great combination is chocolate and green - this can vary from a seafoam green or mint to a kelly or lime green.  Tweak the green to go with your personality - if you are relaxed and calm, then go with more of the seafoam and mint colors.  If you are more of a type A, pair up kelly or lime green with your chocolate.

Hard vs. Soft Window Treatments
If you have privacy or room darkening needs, you probably are in the market for a "hard or utilitarian" window treatment.  Many times, people view these as "well, we've got to have them so let's just do the same treatment in every room".  However, what may happen is that, depending on what decorative treatment you decide to add later, your "hard treatment" may or may not compliment your decorative or "soft treatment" or, even worse, your hard treatment size/headrail/functionality may not make it possible for you to do the soft treatment you want.

That's where we come in.  We can help you envision the entire package.  We look at what hard treatment options will compliment your existing or potential soft treatments in color, texture or function.  We take into account mounting hardware and stack-up (how much of the treatment still shows when it is drawn up & whether or not it needs to be hidden).  All of this prep work ensures that we provide a streamlined look you will love.  Check out these drawings of a recent hard and soft treatment combination proposal.

Haunted House Projects
In the spirit of Halloween, I wanted to share with you some recent "projects" I worked on:

Residential Bathroom: For this client, he had started a red "sponge-painting" project in the bathroom but you could tell that he had never quite mastered the technique.  Red splotches were

everywhere - even in the shower stall (which everyone knows is a

decorating no-no).  I was able to educate him on the use of a better faux finish which would stand the test of time and selected a much less aggressive color than than red.  It did take some time to remove the "red splotches", but all in all, the client was very happy that there was no evidence remaining of his original handy-work.

Commercial Hotel:  Using my "soft" commercial project experience, I was able to meet the design needs of the hotel manager as well

as his split personality.  I incorporated a red bedroom into the design, which the manager's son seemed adamant in having as he kept chanting "red rum, red rum, red rum" over and over again.  I did counsel him on the aggressive emotions red can conjure up, but he was insistent, and I always like a happy client.

All in all, it has been a very fun year helping clients envision their dreams by streamlining the process and solving design dilemmas!
