The green living trend is here to stay, along with a renewed appreciation for color and texture. Here are the top 5 design trends for 2008:

1. Eco-Conscious Materials

The trend toward green living will continue to be big in 2008, and our homes will play a major part in illustrating this trend. Earth-friendly materials, such as recycled plastics, reclaimed wood, and natural, organic fibers will play a large part in our decor. Along with this trend comes a larger appreciation for natural materials such as wood, raffia, organic cottons, and natural accents.

2. Blue and Bold

The year's biggest color trend is blue. Not just any blue, but the blue of Earth as seen from space. This partially comes from the green living trend, but also from the move away from neutrals in our decor. Besides Earth blue, we'll see plenty of bold, rich colors, such as saffrons, iris blues, orchid lavenders, and vibrant greens. These colors both celebrate the Earth and give our homes a more multicultural feel, as many of these bold colors are popular in Asia and South America.

3. Texture

Natural textures will be popular this year, as will texture in fabrics, accessories, and wall treatments. We're moving away from modern simplicity a bit and toward a more luxurious, rich feel in our homes. Texture delights the senses, giving our homes a warm, comfortable feel that looks great at the same time. Look for comfy, nubby-textured pillows, natural stone fireplaces, and warm linens to play center stage.

4. Metals

Metals go along with both the appeal of natural materials and the desire for richness in our surroundings. While chrome and stainless have been very popular for several years, we're seeing a move toward brushed copper and brass, as well as gold accents. Look for these touches in kitchen cabinet hardware, lighting, and accessories.

5. Casual Luxe

The trends toward both natural living and renewed richness and luxury make for a charming combination called "casual luxe". This means that we'll have the vibrant color, the rich textures, and the comfortable feeling we desire--but in an understated, calming way rather than a "hey look at my living room!" kind of way.

Many of the trends reports also do a list of items and colors that are going out of style. I don't personally believe in addressing what is "out of style," because if you love it, it's in style for you and that's all that matters. Besides, in today's eco-friendly atmosphere, it seems completely ridiculous to tell someone to toss out old rugs or furniture simply because they are not part of a current trend. Update your home by adding some of the touches listed above, but don't toss perfectly good items in the name of fashion. That is so 2007....
