Dear Jane-Marie,

Hmmm, the first day of Spring has come and gone and now there are 5 fresh inches of snow on the ground. I tried sprucing up my front door for the upcoming holiday, but the Spring flowers look absolutely ridiculous. Is anyone else feeling stuck? Read below for some ideas for when you are stuck in Decorating Land and are unsure which way to go.
Sincerely,
Jane-Marie

Are you stuck trying to figure out which type of bulb to buy?

Lighting: CFLs, LEDs
Although Green Design seems relatively new, lighting manufacturers have been working for years on developing energy efficient lightbulbs. Here are some key bits of information to know: - If you are environmentally AND budget conscious, the way to go is to buy CFLs (compact flourescent bulbs). However, if you don't like the green or icy tint that the bulbs give off, try Westinghouse 14-watt Mini-Twist in soft white (found at Menards, Mill's Fleet Farm and some specialty lighting stores).
- If you need a dimmable bulb, you may have to wait to go green. Dimmable CFLs are continually being introduced into the marketplace, but there isn't one I have heard of that really works well. If you have had good luck with one, please pass on the information!
- Buy bulbs one at a time at first to see what you like and then, when you find one that works, buy them in bulk.
- LEDs (light emitting diodes) still cost quite a bit more than CFLs, but they use
even less energy and last even longer. An LED light bulb can reduce
energy consumption by 80-90% and lasts around 100,000 hours.
- Look for the Energy Star label on lighting fixtures - this label ensures you get a high energy-efficient performance.
